Write the first reviewORWO is a former East German brand of photographic products. Before and after the Second World War ORWO was one of the most important manufacturers of (black-and-white) film. Film was produced in the German city of Wolfen, hence the name ORWO, Original Wolfen. Over the years ORWO has marketed various film emulsions of which the black-and-white films UN54 and UN74 are the best known. Both black-and-white films have long been loved by photographers and cinematographers alike. After the reunification of East and West Germany, ORWO was privatised and the company fell apart at the end of the 1990s after a bankruptcy. Today, a limited number of black-and-white films are still produced by the German company Filmotec. However, these films are only available in bulk rolls.
ORWO UN74 is a panchromatic black-and-white negative film with a nominal film speed of ISO 400. UN74 delivers particularly sharp images with a nice gray tone reproduction and classic grain. Compared to the UN54, the film is slightly more flexible in use and can also be easily underexposed (push), e.g. at ISO 800. The film is coated on a triacetate base and can therefore also be developed as a black and white slide film. For this we recommend the B&W Reversal Kit from Bellini. If the film is developed as an ordinary black-and-white negative film, Kodak D-76, HC-110 and Rodinal are suitable developers for medium contrast. For a higher contrast and the known cinemalook we recommend Kodak (Bellini) D96.
This ORWO UN74 35mm black-and-white film was cut by our Russian colleagues from SREDA Film Lab (SFL - Moscow) from a fresh bulk roll of UN74 and was wound up in individual recycled 35mm cassettes with 36 shots each. The cassette has no DX coding!
